HALLOWEEN DANCE WITH SCOTT
Toronto, October 2009
For the last few years Lily Choi has been bringing Scott Blevins up to Toronto so the line dancers in the Chinese LD community can celebrate his birthday with him. He has a huge fan club here. This year, she reckoned they could celebrate Halloween at the same time! They all enthusiastically embraced the idea as you will see from the photos below.
The Dance started early, at 3 in the afternoon. There was a set play list that was sent out weeks ago so dancers could check through and practise ahead of time if they wished. As could be expected, we went down memory lane (including one of my all-time favourites 'Have Fun Go Mad') until we came completely up to date with Scott's dances. His latest contra dance 'Hey Mama' completely filled the floor and everyone had a wonderful time with it. Scott was explaining to me how he found the music for one of my favourites 'Coochie Bang Bang'. I bet that I am the only person in the whole Line Dance world to know (or at least it's nice to think that I've got an exclusive!) that Scott heard the song on 'Oprah'!! Scott explained how the second tag (the tricky one) came about and suggested that we dancers must listen carefully to the music rather than dance by count to get that tag correct. I tried and it sure helps. Also another tip -- for section 6 of the dance, 56a7; it's not a hold, you step on the lyrics 'burn burn burn'. Once I looked at the the video of Scott dancing at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oy7kGpOzhFE I could see exactly what he meant. Scott seemed to have a great time with the dancers and gave a very nice speech during the evening telling everyone how much he appreciated their support and enjoyed his visits up to Toronto. This time around his delightful wife Deborah and his Mum, Karen, came with him.
Lily is a tireless event organizer and goes out of her way to ensure that all the dancers have a good time. She whizzes around the floor always with a smile on her face. She had arranged for a Chinese buffet from 6-7 but the music kept going so the dancers didn't have to sit still even during the dinner hour. The costume compeition was a lot of fun as you will see from the photos below. The dancers were a terrific bunch, out to enjoy themselves, which is what our line dancing is all about. Thanks for all your hard work, Lily, it was much appreciated.
